Various law enforcement agencies have been deployed in areas classified as taxi violence hotspots.

The Tsakane Taxi Rank in Ekurhuleni was shut down with immediate effect on Thursday after four taxi drivers were shot dead and six others seriously injured on Wednesday.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi says the drastic measure is necessary to protect the lives of commuters and taxi drivers.

However, he added this was not the only area being closely monitored.

The MEC says there are fears that taxi violence might erupt in other areas of the province.

"There is a similar conflict in the Vaal area, we are monitoring that quite closely. There was a Nanduwe matter in Soweto we are also monitoring quite closely. There have been police deployments there over the last few days."

Eight people believed to include security guards and two taxi owners have been arrested for the shooting in the Brakpan CBD.
