'Axe man' trial resumes
The trial of Phindile Joseph Ntshongwana, a former Blue Bulls' player accused of killing four people with an axe, resumes in the Durban High Court on Tuesday.
Ntshongwana is charged with murdering Thembelenkosini Cebekhulu in Montclair on March 20, 2011, Paulos Hlongwa two days later, Simon Ngidi the following day, and an unidentified man sometime that week.
He is also accused of kidnapping and raping a woman on November 28, 2010, and faces two charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The woman, who may not be named, was kidnapped in central Durban and held captive for three days.
Ntshongwana was previously sent for mental assessment after his father Liston told the court his son had psychiatric problems.
In June 2011, it was decided to admit him to the Fort Napier Hospital, in Pietermaritzburg, where he was examined by a state psychologist and a private psychiatrist.
The doctors concluded he was fit to stand trial.
Ntshongwana was arrested at his parents' house in Yellowwood Park, Durban. One of his alleged victims was decapitated and his head dumped in a bin.
