Bad manners or a touch of nerves from Trump?

Social media is abuzz after US President Donald Trump left the first lady, his wife Melania, behind when they arrived for lunch at the White House shortly before his inauguration.

Trumps at the Whitehouse

The video shows Trump getting out of the car upon arrival at the White House, leaving his wife, Melania to catch up with him on the red carpet.

According to the School of Etiquette's Courtney Carey, Trump should have waited for his wife to join him before starting to walk up the stairs.

"The norm is that a VIP gets out of the vehicle first but then he or she should wait for their better half or partner to join them before entering a building," Carey told Jacaranda FM News.

She added that it could be perceived as downright rude or that he might not prioritise his marriage and family life, but rather business.

"One could argue that he doesn't regard his marriage as one of his top priorities but on the other side you have to remember that the world was watching and that it could have been an honest mistake because he was nervous." she says.

Carey also notes that they should have walked into the White House as a united front and by not doing so he could have created a misperception about his family life.

Here at home,  Carey says chivalry is alive and well in South Africa and that we still have the tradition and respect for women when it comes to common decency.

"There was an incident in South Africa where President Jacob Zuma got out of the car and waited for his wife to join him, which was a fabulous show of chivalry. But then we had the deputy president get out of his car and he did not wait for his wife," Carey says.
