Bahamas backtracks on repatriation of KZN woman’s remains

The family of a KwaZulu-Natal woman who died in the Bahamas says the Bahamian government has now backtracked - and says it will no longer be releasing Buhle Bhengu's body.

The family had been informed that Bhengu's remains would be repatriated.

Bhengu's sister, Mbali Bhengu, says they received word from family members in the Bahamas last night saying that country’s government says it can't move the Buhle's body, as they are not equipped to move an infected corpse.

"They don't have proper health gear that they can use to wrap the body - for it to come back to South Africa. Another thing is they don't have the license that permits them to transport a body from the Bahamas that has an infection."

Bhengu died following a short illness last month while working on an MSC cruise ship in Bahamas.

Officials initially told the family they would be cremating her on Tuesday.
