South African doctor Cyril Karabus's bail money has been returned to him, but he is still waiting for his passport from United Arab Emirates (UAE) officials, it was reported on Tuesday.
His lawyer Michael Bagraim told the Cape Times the R250,000 bail money had been returned, which "shows there is movement". The 78-year-old paediatric oncologist has been detained in the UAE since August 18, after being sentenced in absentia for the death of a Yemeni girl he treated for leukaemia in 2002. He was acquitted on March 21 and won on appeal, but his return to South Africa was delayed because he was on the UAE's database as a fugitive from justice. On Monday, he reportedly waited to no avail at the Abu Dhabi prison, where he was held, for his passport to be returned.
