‘Bake my day’ says SANDF as DA calls for investigation
Updated | By Eva Chipa
The South African National Defence Force recently opened it 6th bakery to help feed troops and make ends meet.
However, the Democratic Alliance (DA) says it will write to the Minister of Defence Thandi Modise to investigate the chain of bakeries.
“We will write to the Minister of Defence, Thandi Modise, to call for an investigation into the South African National Defence Force's bizarre decision to create a chain of bakeries which could potentially constitute as irregular and wasteful expenditure.”
The political party says while they acknowledge the budget cuts, bakeries are not the solution.
“While the DA acknowledges the fact that the cash-strapped SANDF is confronted with a number of operational challenges, the opening of bakeries is not the solution.
“These bakeries fall outside of the defence forces mandate and has potentially opened SANDF up to irregular and wasteful expenditure of its already limited funds.”
The SANDF announced that its division in Potchestroom has officially launched the 6th bakery on Monday
In earlier post for the Johannesburg-based bakery they confirmed that with the current strength, the bakery at the Army Support Base in Johannesburg will be able to bake six thousand loafs a day, which will be delivered three times a week to the surrounding units.
