Bakery sparks Pistorius cookie outrage
Updated | By Staff Writer
A popular Cape Town bakery was forced to apologise Tuesday after bringing out an array of Oscar Pistorius themed cookies ahead of the South African athlete's murder trial next week.
The cookies -- one of which depicted him with the logo of his former sponsor Nike and the wording "Just do it. He did it" -- caused an online backlash.
Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door on Valentine's Day last year. He claims he mistook her for an intruder.
Another cookie depicted a toilet with the wording "Caution" and "Using toilet Please don't shoot!"
The Paralympian gold medallist was also shown running with arms outstretched and the words "And the oscar goes to jail", a pun linked to the upcoming Oscars ceremony.
The bakery tweeted: "Not sure if these are in good taste, but they sure taste good" above a picture of the cookies, before deleting the tweet and apologising.
"We seriously got it wrong with the OscarMedia Meme cookies & we are hanging our collective heads in shame.
"WeAlwaysRememberReeva."
"We messed up completely & we own our mistake. We apologise sincerely & we regret any offence we have caused to the Steenkamp family," said Charly's Bakery.
The shop, known for its quirky baked goods and featured on a reality television show, said the biscuits were not for sale.
The murder trial opens Monday.
