The Basic Education Department has vowed to pay unpaid
December stipends for education and general assistants this month of January.

The education and general assistants were employed last year in December.
The departmental spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says unpaid stipends will be paid by the end of this month.
“The Department of Basic Education is working together with the Provincial Education Departments to make sure that the education assistants, as well as general assistants, who were appointed in December get paid their money at the end of January.”
The Department is working with Provincial Education Departments to implement the Presidential Employment Stimulus aimed at temporary employing 300,000 youth as education and general assistants.

Mhlanga says incomplete documents caused a delay in processing payment for the assistants.
“This is because some of them did not get paid due to variety of reasons which included incomplete documents and a verification process which was incomplete because when they were appointed, schools were closing.
“The department is now coordinating the function together with provinces to make sure that outstanding matters are dealt with and that those who are not paid, are paid,” adds Mhlanga.
“We also appeal to candidates themselves to make sure that they give us quality information, credible documents that we can use so that the verification process does not take long. We are doing everything that we can to make sure that the payments are done and that everyone who is not paid, receive their money at the end of this month.”
