Basic education ready to absorb Grade R - Motshekga
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Department of Basic Education has declare itself ready to take over Grade R from social development.
Early Childhood Development (ECD) will be migrated from the Department of Social Development as part of the 2030 vision to improve education.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga briefed the media on the final Council of Education Ministers of the current administration in Pretoria on Friday.
She acknowledged that the move will place an additional burden on the department.
"But our view as national office, with deputy minister, if you want to turbocharger the system that by 2030 you have a different education landscape, ECD is one of the key factors.”
Motshekga said the move will be an expensive investment in terms of human and financial resources and that her department is still ironing out norms and standards of employment with the Education Labour Relations Council.
Motshekga says her department will work with social development when it comes to psychosocial services as basic education does not have the capacity to run it on its own.
