The Department of Basic Education says it welcomes the announcement made by the South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu ) that none of their members will report for work on Monday.

The union said in a statement that Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga failed to deliver on the terms and conditions the two parties agreed upon.

The minister announced on 30th April that school management teams would return on May 11 and teachers on the 18th .

But Sadtu says Motshekga’s department has not delivered on measures to ensure the protection of teachers’ health when they return back to school.

The department’s Elijah Mhlanga says provincial departments have already written to staff members.

“We are appealing to them to stay away until such time that offices are ready. We cannot take short cuts when it comes to putting in place measures that could prevent the infection.

“We want to try our best to that the environment is secure and that the conditions are conducive for work to resume,” says Mhlanga.

A suitable start date has yet to be determined.
