Bathabile Dlamini to appear in court for perjury

Former minister of social development Bathabile Dlamini is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of perjury.
The charges against the 59-year-old Dlamini relates to statements she made to the Constitutional Court during an inquiry into the social grants crisis.
The Constitutional Court’s Acting Judge, Bernard Ngoepe found that Dlamini’s conduct had been “reckless and grossly negligent”.
She was ordered to pay part of the costs of litigation.
Dlamini paid R650,000 to the Black Sash Trust and Freedom Under Law, the two organisations that took her to court.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says she was served with the summons a few weeks ago.
“During the proceedings in the ConCourt, the former minister was called upon to indicate on affidavit as a representation why she should not be joined to the proceedings in her personal capacity and why she should not pay the costs out of her own pocket.
“It is alleged that the suspect therefore filed an affidavit which raised conflicting facts in relation to responsibility initiated by her.”
The matter was then referred to the National Prosecution Authority (NPA).
“This then resulted to the decision of her being prosecuted,” says Mogale.
