Belfast fugitive re-arrested

"The second fugitive, Petros Mamaru, aged 24, who escaped from lawful custody in the Belfast police cells on 04 October 2014, has been re-arrested," spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi said in a statement.

 

Mamaru, who was initially arrested for double murder, was cornered at his hide-out in Groblersdal after members of the public spotted him and alerted police on Wednesday.

 

"The police then moved swiftly and brought Mamaru to book who, apart from the murder charges, is also facing an additional charge of escape from lawful custody," he said.

 

Mamaru and two others, Lucky Sibuyi, 24, and Skhumbuzo Mthethwa, 21, allegedly escaped through an opening cut into the steel rooftop in the exercise area of the cells.

 

Mthethwa was arrested on October 9 in Siyathuthuka Location near Belfast.

 

"A search for Sibuyi who was charged with armed robbery is still continuing. We are still appealing to any person with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward," said Hlathi.
