Nowadays, Elana Meyer leaves the watch at home and says she runs to keep sane.

South Africans were introduced to the small woman with the long breath, when she won the silver medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics in the 10,000 metres.

It took 18 years to break her African record set in the 15 kilometres road running event, while Meyer also held the half marathon African record from 1999 to 2009.

That was a different Elana running towards different goals.

The one constant from her running days, is her love for Stellenbosch. She was first introduced to the picturesque town as a first year student. She never left. This is where she now raises two young children, runs in the mountains for pleasure and also run an academy to give advice to the new generation of long distance athletes.

Elana believes like anything in life, there's no lift to the top floor of success. Just start. Put one foot in front of the other and keep running.
