Beyond the Spotlight: Eon de Vos
Updated | By Gerda de Sousa
Entertainment gave him wings, but flying is in his blood.
Eon de Vos made a name for himself as a heart throb since his appearance on our TV screens in the 1970s.
In "Die Winter van 14 Julie" in 1977 and "Nicolene" in 1978 he became the darling of many and was catapulted to becoming a regular face on TV.
His butter smooth voice also led to radio and more TV appearances.
Today, that calm voice of reason makes the announcements to thousands of passengers who fly with Comair and Kulula.
He now commands B737 200s, 300s and 400s.
De Vos pioneered Aerial ENG (Electronic News Gathering) in SA and was the pilot from the Netstar (Vodacom) Traffic Helicopter on TV2 a few years ago.
But for Captain Eon, the days of seeking the thrill of on-air broadcasts are something of the past. He's more than satisfied with taking to the skies and speaking to South Africa from another high vantage point.
He admits the only people who can still clip his wings, are his wife and children at their home in Cape Town.
