Bid to halt Springboks in court

The High Court in Pretoria will on Wednesday hear an application by a political party, Agency for a New Agenda, to stop the Springboks from flying to England for the Rugby World Cup that kicks off on the 18 September.

The political party is arguing that the squad has too many white players.

Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula and the SA Rugby Union were named as respondents.

The party wants the passports of the Springbok players to be taken away so they cannot fly to England for the tournament.

They claim there has been no transformation in the past 21 years and that rugby is still seen as a white sport with a few black players that do not get the opportunity to play.

Minister Mbalula was not expected at court, but told JacarandaFM Sport that he will oppose, but was not following the case closely.

"I think it is an alarmist approach of people who seek political relevance.  Nonetheless, we are a constitutional state and we will respond accordingly," he said.

There was a large media contingent inside the courtroom with the Agency for a New Agenda expected to address the media in response to whatever ruling is delivered.
