Billions in mining royalties mismanaged, stolen
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
A report by Corruption Watch has found that billions of rands in mining royalties meant for communities have been mismanaged through maladministration and corruption.
The research, conducted in 2018, focused on mining areas in Limpopo and North West.
"Our key finding was that there is, in fact, gross levels of maladministration and mismanagement from the parts of, provincial governments, traditional authorities, communities, and some mining companies in their role of ensuring that the beneficiaries of those royalties receive their monies," says the organisation’s Mashudu Masutha.

She says these communities are subjected to abject poverty due to an abuse of power and corruption and are forced to fight for basic service delivery from the government.
Masutha says there is no clear policy on how the provincial government administers and manages the funds, nor how communities can gain access to the funds held by mining companies.
