The Black Lawyers Association has offered to provide legal services to Stellenbosch University student Babalo Ndwayana.

Ndwayana hit the headlines earlier this month when a white student Theuns du Toit urinated on his belongings at one of the residences at the university.
BLA President Bayethe Maswazi says the association is willing to provide legal advice to Ndwayana following his ordeal.
“When discussing the issue we felt that there could be a role for us. We understand that they have reported the matter to the police and there might be a decision to prosecute.
"We are available to advise them on whatever legal advice they need in respect of that. They might want to explore other avenues of suing and we can explore the process of success in respect of that and any other legal support that the family may need in connection to that matter.”

Maswazi also vowed to approach the university’s management to discuss the challenges faced by black students.
“Stellenbosch as a university has always been a concern to many black students who are studying there,” he says.
“We feel that we are going to interact with the management of that university to ensure that there are systems in place, processes and programmes dedicated to the building of a Stellenbosch that truly becomes at the centre of protection of knowledge and scholarship that is free from racism.”
Du Toit has since been suspended from the university and is also facing criminal charges.
