Black rhino bull poached in KNP

Police in Mpumalanga have launched an investigation following the poaching of a black rhino bull in the Kruger National Park.

The rhino was killed on Saturday morning, but the carcass was only retrieved on Sunday after vultures were seen hovering in the area.
To date, the estimated population of black rhinos stands at around 6.000.
"All we have is just the small bones as well as the skull, and indications are that it was a black rhino bull,” said SanParks spokesperson Ike Phaahla.
"Those are very scarce, and it's heartbreaking when you come across a scene like this."

Combing the scene, the projectiles used to kill the rhino could be seen lying on the ground.

Phaahla adds that 85% of the Kruger Natal Park’s successful arrests are due to the efforts of the K9 dogs.
The K9 unit is part of the additional measures to anti-poaching efforts and provides highly trained dogs to pick up human scents.
Briefing the media on the success, Phaahla says some of those who have been arrested include former rangers who worked in the park.
"We've had quite successful campaigns against poachers, and we have had people arrested and now facing time in jail.
"We are working very closely with the NPA (National Prosecuting Authority) to put together a case, and they've always presented compelling evidence to the courts, and the courts have given appropriate sentences.
"Quite a lot of people have been arrested, including our own. We have had three ex-colleagues arrested in recent months, they are facing charges and they will be facing trial very soon."
