A Bloemfontein police officer has been arrested for taking an undisclosed amount of money from a taxi driver who allegedly helped illegal immigrants that were trying to cross over to Lesotho on Monday.
The police’s Mahlomola Kareli says the woman was arrested at the Maseru border post on Monday.
“The arrest followed an incident on 7 March 2023 at around 05:30 where the accused took an undisclosed amount of money from a taxi driver who was allegedly crossing over to Lesotho with illegal immigrants. The taxi driver and four illegal immigrants were arrested on the spot by members from the Border Management Authorities and they are currently in custody after being denied bail.”
Mahlomola says the sergeant will appear in court next month.
“The 44-year-old sergeant appeared in court and is out on R3000 bail. She will appear again in the Ladybrand Magistrate’s Court on the 21 April 2023 pending further investigation on charges of corruption, aiding and abetting and defeating the ends of justice.”
