Sixty-two-year-old Daniel Mokwai appeared in the Bloemhof Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

He has been charged with three counts of murder, including that of his own son, Mothibi Mokwai, aged 31.

The two other victims are teenagers aged between 16 and 17, related to his wife.

Mokwai allegedly claimed insurance policies of all the victims who died between 2020 and 2022 after eating pies believed to be laced with poison.

North West police spokesperson Adele Myburgh said the victims were considered to have died of natural causes.

"However, family members reported him to the police after becoming suspicious that he murdered their relatives by allegedly buying all three of them pies. They would then get sick after eating the pie and eventually die.

"The bodies of all three deceased were exhumed, and pathology reports confirmed that they were poisoned, leading to the murder investigations."

The accused has been remanded in police custody until 11 September.
