BMA, Zim to discuss issue of unaccompanied minors crossing border

The Commissioner of Border Management Authority, Michael Masiapato, says South Africa and Zimbabwe remain committed to addressing the various issues at the border between the two countries.
Masiapato hosted his Zimbabwean counterpart in South Africa on Wednesday to showcase South Africa’s model of administration and border management coordination.
"This meeting is a demonstration to the commitment that we have made to address our common challenges and quest to improving the quality of life of citizens in both countries," said Masiapato.
The visit comes after the Border Management Authority prevented what it described as the trafficking of more than 400 children from Zimbabwe into the country earlier this month.
A total of 443 unaccompanied children from Zimbabwe were intercepted on 42 buses entering South Africa.
He said the meeting will also address the issue of unaccompanied children.
The children, who were all under the age of eight, have since been returned to Zimbabwe.
"However, work has been undergoing until this point, wherein some of those that were fairly intercepted inside South Africa had already been processed back into the Zimbabwean side with the intention to reconcile them with their families,” said Masiapato.
