Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba and the MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun launched the Road Safety Campaign at the Grasmere Toll Plaza.

Sun said unlike previous years, the campaign will focus more on safety than law enforcement.

"Our primary job today is to ensure the safety of passengers in the cars, motorists that are driving and everyone who is using the roads this festive holiday," said Sun.

The City of Joburg has also introduced body cameras for police officers.

Sun says the body camera will be used to protect police officers in executing their duties.

"The cameras will increase the police officer's function and protect the residents that come into encounter with police."

An additional R31million has also been set aside by the City, to employ additional 1500 Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers.

"This will increase visibility of law enforcement officers in our communities.

"Officers will be responsible for roadblocks, patrolling of parks, monitor motorists and run various information campaigns about safety during the festive period," said Mashaba.

The campaign will run until the end of April.
