The body of a three-year-old boy has been retrieved from a pit toilet in Tshino Nditwanin in the Vhembe district of Limpopo.
The child, whose body was retrieved on Monday, was last seen by his uncle on Sunday morning.
“The hard-working Search and Rescue Unit, joined by K9 Search Rescue Team, Provincial Search and Rescue Unit, EMS, and the local police started with a search operation which culminated in this horrific discovery,” said police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba.
Members of the rescue team started digging in the pit toilet after the K9 dogs reacted when in the vicinity of the ablution structure.
“The body was subsequently found and was handed over to the local police,” Ledwaba said.
Meanwhile, Limpopo’s police commissioner Thembi Hadebe has pleaded with parents to be extra cautious when looking after children.
"These kinds of incidents can only be avoided if we as parents, exercise extra caution and care and look after our children at all times,” she said.
