The body of an 18-year-old boy who drowned while crossing a river has been recovered in Kliptown, Soweto.
Johannesburg emergency services and the City of Johannesburg Aquatic Rescue Unit, together with the South African Police Service water wing, resumed the search and recovery operation on Wednesday morning.
It is understood the boy slipped and fell into the river stream on Tuesday afternoon.
The river was overflowing following the heavy hail and rain on Monday afternoon.
Joburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says the scene will be handed over to the police.
"The body will be handed over to the South African police service for further investigation.
"We just want to plead with our residents to continue to look after young kids to stay away from river streams since now the water levels are much higher so that we can be able to prevent incidents like this one," says Mulaudzi.
