A multiple stakeholder search and recovery operation in the Eastern Cape Town of Port Alfred has ended in tragedy after the body of a teenager was discovered on Friday.
The 16-year-old from Soweto, in Gauteng, was last seen swimming with a group of friends who were attending an unrelated sports event in the area.
On Friday, 6 December, the South African Police Services, Police K9 Search and Rescue, assisted by Ndlambe Municipal Environmental officers, Ndlambe Beach authorities, and Ndlambe lifeguards, conducted search efforts for the missing teenager, who had gone missing in the surf zone at East Beach on Thursday.
“During ongoing search efforts, a body was located and recovered, and taken into the care of the police and the government health and forensic pathology services.
“While formal identification by family is in progress, the body is believed to be the missing teenager from Soweto, in Gauteng,” said the National Sea Rescue Institute’s Craig Lambinon.
