Bogus doctors in North West court for fake medical certificates
Two Ugandan nationals accused of issuing bogus sick certificates appeared briefly in the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court in the North West on Monday.
Biral Wayaba and Samuel Mucamba were each released on a R2000 bail and their case was postponed to May 20 for further investigation.
The duo were arrested in Rustenburg central business district on April 18.
Police were alerted to the alleged fraud after an employee at a shopping mall produced a fake medical certificate at work, bearing the name of a well-known doctor who had once warned people in a local newspaper about the practice of falsified sick notes.
The employer then contacted the doctor’s practice rooms in order to verify the authenticity of the medical certificate. The police were contacted when the doctor denied treating the patient.
The employee then took officers to the consulting rooms of the bogus doctors.
Upon arrival, the police found the two suspects “consulting” with another patient. Officers found medical certificates and date stamps bearing the names of several medical practitioners.
