Bogus Hawks officer found in possession of fake NPA documents

A man found in possession of fake documents from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the South African Police Services (SAPS), as well as the Hawks has appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed the man appeared on charges of impersonating officer an officer from the elite crime-fighting unit and is expected back in court on February 22 for a formal bail hearing.
"There is a lot of stuff that we managed to pick up from him - documents that come from the NPA, the SAPS as well as the Hawks. So we are also trying to check where he got the documents from."
Lazarus Sibanyoni was arrested following an alleged attempt to extort R200 000 from an unnamed official implicated at commission of inquiry into state capture.
The 34-year-old suspect had allegedly told the complainant that he was a Hawks member and promised to make investigations against him by the Hawks and NPA disappear.
"He has been charged with impersonating a police officer, fraud as well as conspiracy to commit crime."
