Officers responded to a complaint on Wednesday morning and went to Nels Pretoria home, said police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini.
We went to check the premises. Nothing was found there and we are investigating, he said.
Asked who had filed the complaint or how it was received, Dlamini said: That is part of the police investigation so I cannot reveal that to the media.
Nel refused to elaborate when called by News24.
I dont want to comment, he said over the phone, asking that all complaints be directed to the National Prosecuting Authority.
NPA spokesperson Velekhaya Mgobhozi did not reveal further details regarding the bomb scare at Nels house nor a bomb scare the same day at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.
The question of the bomb scare in the [North Gauteng] High Court and in the house of advocate Gerrie Nel is a matter for the police and the investigating team. We cannot comment, Mgobhozi said.
He said he had spoken to Nel about the news on Wednesday but revealed nothing further.
Nel was the lead prosecutor in the trial of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp and received a five-year sentence for culpable homicide.
