Former ANC MP Bongani Bongo has been granted bail of R5,000 following his appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Bongo faces charges of corruption linked to his alleged attempt to interfere with a sitting of the Eskom board and the Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises.
The former State Security minister returned to court on the same matter four years after he was acquitted by the now-impeached Judge President of the Western Cape John Hlophe, who cited a lack of evidence as the reason for dropping the charges.
Hlope’s decision was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeal, which found the decision legally flawed.
Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said that between September and October 2017, Bongo allegedly approached a member of the committee, seeking to arrange a meeting to prevent a scheduled sitting to discuss allegations of state capture at the power utility.
“During the meeting, Bongo allegedly suggested that the sitting could be blocked if the committee member ‘named his price’ for ‘gratification’,” Mogale said.
Among the bail conditions set, Bongo has been ordered to hand in his travel documents and report any travels to the investigating officer.
Bongo, who denies the allegations, is expected back in court in March.
