Bosa slams Gauteng for ‘unacceptable’ underspending

Build One South Africa has slammed the Gauteng provincial government for underspending R1.8 billion of its budget in the 2024/2025 financial year.

On Monday, Gauteng Finance MEC Lebogang Maile confirmed that the money could not be spent as budgeted, but said the funds would be allocated to other programmes and projects.
The provincial government has been criticised for not spending its full budget allocation despite the well-documented service delivery problems in various parts of the country’s economic hub.
BOSA MPL Ayanda Allie spoke in the legislature on Tuesday.
"These figures are alarming, at a time when our province is buckling under the weight of poverty, joblessness, collapsing infrastructure, and failing healthcare, this level of underspending is both unacceptable and irresponsible.
"The statement highlights the failure of the provincial government to fully utilise its allocated budget, despite urgent and widespread service delivery challenges facing communities across the province.”
Allie also called for urgent action and accountability following the underspending.
“We need to move from statements to solutions. The return of R1.8 billion is a slap in the face of every Gauteng resident still waiting for decent healthcare, quality education, safer communities, and real job opportunities,” said Allie.
During a media briefing on Monday, Maile said that only R85 million is at risk of being forfeited to National Treasury.
