BOSA demands public access to sexual offenders register in schools

Build One South Africa on Wednesday demanded the public release of the sexual offenders register at all schools to ensure predators are not teaching children.

BOSA leader Mmusi Maimane led a picket outside the Department of Education in Kimberley, Northern Cape.
The picket was in support of parents demanding action against teachers and principals facing sexual assault allegations.
According to the party, despite 15 reported cases, the department's response remains inadequate, fuelling a child sexual abuse epidemic.
Spokesperson Roger Solomons said there is a need to obtain police clearance for all employees.
“There is a child sexual abuse epidemic in this province, and it must be eradicated immediately.
“There are almost 500,000 teachers in the public schooling system, and while there was a commitment last year to do so, there is no way to tell if every single one has been checked against the offenders register by their school or the department.
“In addition, the National Department of Basic Education ought to make it a stern requirement that every single potential employee obtains and presents a full police clearance, including proof of clearance from the Sexual Offenders Register.”
