The suspect appeared in the juvenile section of the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Gauteng, Phindi Mjonodwane, says an preliminary investigation will start once the assessment by the officer is complete.

"This is to allow the boy to be assessed by the probation officer. The probation officer will then compile a report that will be presented to the court so that a process of conducting a preliminary inquiry can be kick-started. That process is per prescripts of the Child Justice Act and should be conducted within 48 hours of the child’s arrest."

The boy will appear in court again on Friday.
