Brandfort renamed to Winnie Mandela
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has approved the name change of Brandfort.
The small Free State town, north of Bloemfontein, will now be known as Winnie Mandela, after the late struggle icon.
It’s the same town the ANC stalwart Madikizela-Mandela was banished to by the then apartheid Government in 1977.
Mthethwa gazetted the change on Friday.
“This name change is just one of the ways that the Department is honouring Mama Winnie Mandela’s legacy, as we approach Women’s Day under the 2021 theme “The Year of Charlotte Mannya-Maxeke: Realising Women’s Rights,” says spokesperson Masechaba Khumalo.
“This theme is aimed at promoting women’s equality and sustaining the fight against Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
“It is pivotal that our geographical names reflect the history of such icons,” Khumalo adds.
