Interest rates have been hiked by 25 basis points to 9.5%;  the repo rate now standS at 6% for South Africans. Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank says that the central bank couldn’t delay a rates hike as the growth in the economy was slow, the rand was getting weaker and the inflation was increasing. 

 

 

Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete held a press briefing yesterday to explain that the tightening up of the rules in parliament was intended to enable members to exercise their rights without being disrupted by others. 

 

Mbete confirmed that the rules committee will receive a report on the 28th on recommended amendments to the rules book which will be presented to the house on the 30th. 

 

Members of Parliament will vote on stricter rules to keep order in parliament next week.

Numsa leadership believes that its efforts to try and rejoin Cosatu has come to the end of the road, it has done all it can to reclaim the trade union federation.


This is according to the union's Karl Cloete, who briefed media yesterday following a recent National Executive Committee meeting; he said it was time to start looking at building a new federation.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the M1 on the Jan Smuts off-ramp in Parktown. According to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department's spokesperson, Wayne Minaar a truck overturned leaving chicken pieces scattered on the road.

 

 

The teen who sparked an internet sensation by building a drone which was able to fire a handgun was arrested on Wednesday.

 

Eighteen year old Austin Haughwout was charged with assault and interfering with a police officer. His charges have nothing to do with the drone.

 

Last Sunday it was reported that there was a physical altercation incident with police officers. 

 

He was released on $20 000 bond on Thursday.
