VOLKSWAGEN SA SAYS ALL ITS MODELS COMPLY: Volkswagen South Africa has issued a formal press release confirming that all vehicles in South Africa, comply with this standard for Nitrogen oxide emissions. This while the investigation is ongoing into cheating by the mother company in Germany. Volkswagen will suspend the sale of some diesel vehicle models in Australia while it addresses the scandal over emissions-cheating devices, the company announced Saturday. VW said it was immediately stopping the sale of vehicles fitted with 1.6- or 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines. "The suspension will remain until the emission issues are addressed in those vehicles," the VW Australia statement said. Audi also announced it was suspending the sale of vehicles with 2.0-litre EA189 diesel engines that are certified to the European emission standard EU5. Pieter van der Merwe reports.

REPORT - VAVI ARRESTED FOR SPEEDING: Sacked Cosatu secretary-general, Zwelinzima Vavi has reportedly been arrested for speeding, according to reports. News 24 reports that the Ekhuruleni Metro Police does not want to confirm or deny that Vavi was arrested for driving 207 km/h on the R24 freeway. According to the report, Metro police was only willing to confirm that they arrested six motorists for speeding and that at least one is a prominent person.

RENOWNED ECONOMIST CALLS FOR TRANSPARENCY: World renowned French economist, Prof Thomas Piketty has called for transparency to eradicate inequality in the developing world. Picketty, who addressed the 13th annual Nelson Mandela lecture over the weekend, says South Africa needs a triple-pronged tax system:  a progressive inheritance tax; a progressive wealth tax; and a progressive income tax. Silindelo Masekane reports.

NEW LOOK DA: The New Look Opposition DA's shadow cabinet takes effect from today after leader, Mmusi Maimane announced a shuffle of MP's portfolio's at the weekend. The move to re-deploy former DA Police spokesperson, Dianne Kohler-Barnard to deputy in the Public Works-portfolio, after her pro-PW Botha Facebook-share created an opportunity to make the changes that were in the pipe-line, anyway - according to party-leader, Mmusi Maimane. He also confirmed that the disciplinary process against Kohler-Barnard would continue - despite the re-shuffle.

ECO MOBILITY FESTIVAL IN SANDTON: Sandton's Eco-mobility Festivel is in full swing from today with the use of private vehicles discouraged in favour of piblic transport, cycling and walking in the Sandton CBD for the rest fo the month. The Jo'burg transport department's Lisa Seftle says the only road that will be completely closed to private cars is West Street.
