Buang Jones joins seven other candidates on the list selected by the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services to replace Kevin Malunga, who has occupied the position for the last seven years.

Jones’ comments on the Eben Etzebeth case at a community meeting in Langebaan in the Western Cape drew widespread criticism and controversy. Jones is reported saying Etzebeth, who is accused of making use of a racial slur in Langebaan in late August as he left a pub with a group of friends, will not get away with the alleged offence this time.

Jones allegedly said the Springbok player was used to “getting away with murder”. The public outrage allegedly resulted in the commission instructing Jones not to make further comments on the case in the media, until an investigation into his comments has been completed. Despite this, the commission still plans on instituting proceedings against the Springbok lock to the Equality Court, something which Etzebeth’s lawyers want to block via the High Court.

Jones and the other candidates will be interviewed on 12 and 13 November.
