The president is weighing up his options following the release of the independent panel's report into the Phala Phala scandal.

The panel found his handling of the theft of foreign currency may have violated the Constitution and his oath of office.

BUSA says the findings and the potential removal of a sitting president pose a risk to the economy and threatens a further erosion of investor confidence.

The organisation's Cas Coovadia says the latest developments come on top of what is an already unstable political climate in the run-up to the ANC's national conference later this month.

"We believe South Africa has amazing opportunities, we believe that business has a particular role to play in working with government to exploit those opportunities and to use those opportunities to grow the economy and the socio-economy."

"We need to handle the situation very seriously in a way that it builds our country and enables us to continue to try and build a strong economy."
