Bushiri earns over R500k a month, court hears
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phaleatsile
The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has heard that self-proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri's gross monthly income is R566 000.
Bushiri, his wife Mary, and third suspect Landiwe Ntlokwana appeared before the court on Wednesday on fraud and money laundering charges.
The charges relate to an investment scheme.
The matter was postponed to Friday as the state has argued it is not ready to proceed with the formal bail application.
The prosecutor argued that there are still matters that need to be verified by the state before they can oppose bail.
Some of these matters include verification of the address for the Bushiri's, the state says according to the information it has, the residence that has been provided is up for sale.
The other matter of concern is an affidavit from the Department of Home Affairs, which states that the Bushiris residence documentation in South Africa will expire soon.
Advocate Annalien van der Heever, for the accused, said they were ready for bail application as the state has had two years to investigate the matter.
Van der Heever said it is unconstitutional for the state to arrest the accused and them claim to still be investigating, she questioned the strength of the state’s case.
The magistrate has given the state a day to verify all outstanding matters.
The accused will remain at the Kgoshi Mampure Correctional Center.
