Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane has withdrawn her nomination for the position of chief justice.
Mkhwebane was amongst the eight candidates who were shortlisted to replace Mogoeng Mogoeng.
The panel chaired by Judge Navi Pillay, which was elected to evaluate the public nominations, submitted the final report to the presidency on Thursday.
The presidency says Mkhwebane tendered her withdrawal from the process on Wednesday.
Dr Wallace Amos Mgoqi, who also qualified for the position, withdrew from the process earlier this month.
The six remaining candidates are:
-Judge President John Hlophe
-Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga
- President of the Supreme Court of Appeal Mandisa Maya
-Judge President Dunstan Mlambo
-Advocate Alan Nelson, SC
- Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
“After giving consideration to the recommendations of the panel the president will decide which candidate(s) from the shortlist presented to him by the panel to refer to the Judicial Service Commission and the leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly,” says acting spokesperson to the president Tyrone Seale.
