Six municipal wards in four provinces are up for grabs on Wednesday when 20 candidates representing nine political parties contest by-elections, the IEC said.

"Municipal ward by-elections will take place in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the Western Cape on Wednesday, May 28," Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) spokeswoman Kate Bapela said in a statement on Tuesday.
"A total of six wards will be contested by 20 candidates, representing nine political parties."
Two by-elections would take place in Gauteng. Ward 27 in Tshwane metro [Pretoria] would be contested by Mokgadi Maria Rallele of the African National Congress, Michael Mkhari of the Democratic Alliance, and Dimakatso Ernest Bodiba of the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the imprisonment of the councillor.
Ward 58 in Tshwane metro would be contested by Annastacia Penelope Sutane of the African Independent Congress, Sam Moimane of the ANC, Elma Johanna Nel of the DA, and Maurine Dieketseng Mphuthi of the PAC, she said.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant when the councillor resigned.
One by-election would be held in KwaZulu-Natal. Ward two in Umvoti [Greytown] municipality would be contested by Lunga Obert Mdlalose of the ANC, Siphiwe Patrick Ngubane of the Inkatha Freedom Party, and Thandwayinkosi Handsome Ndlovu of the National Freedom Party.
The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant when the councillor resigned.
Limpopo would also have one ward contested by three candidates.
"Ward four in Lephalale [Ellisras] municipality will be contested by Xikombiso Given Mathonsi of the ANC, Matlakala Johanna Setlhare of the Congress of the People, and Sybil Maud Nieuwoudt of the DA," said Bapela.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
Two wards would be contested in the Western Cape. Ward 25 in the City of Cape Town would be contested by Lorraine Breintjies of the ANC, Beverley van Reenen of the DA, Stephan Ronal Lottering of the First Nation Liberation Alliance, and Naomi Veronica Alexander of the Patriotic Alliance.
"The ward was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant as a result of the resignation of the councillor," said Bapela.
Ward 6 in Matzikama [Vredendal] municipality would be contested by Ruiter Julies of the ANC, Beaula Brunildah Julies of the DA, and Siena Syster of the PA.
The ward was previously represented by the DA and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
