The draft policy deals with both freight and passenger rail transportation and has been in the pipeline for years. It was touted by former deputy transport minister Jeremy Cronin as the blueprint for reversing the decline in a critical sector.

Acting Cabinet spokeswoman Phumla Williams said it would enable “the revitalisation of the railway industry through strategic investment-led policy interventions that are aligned to the National Development Plan”.

“The aim is to create an efficient transport system that is able to compete locally and internationally, and reduce transportation costs.” -ANA
