Communications Minister Nomvula Mokonyane faced a barrage of questions from the South African media this morning – only hours after the US leader said on Twitter that he wants a complete study about land and farm seizures and “the large scale killing of farmers”.

Mokonyane reiterated that the administration of President Cyril Ramaphosa regards itself as a responsible government.

“We are much concerned about, of course, that it’s unfortunate that a first citizen of the US can actually say we have amended the constitution. Just that.”

The minister made it clear that law enforcement agencies should act against those behind illegal land invasions, as well as individuals fueling the flames of farm killings and farm expropriations.

Mokonyane added that government will intensify campaigns by Brand SA to market South Africa’s image overseas, amidst fears that the latest diplomatic spat with the US could have a further negative impact on the rand, foreign investment and the already battling economy.

The minister admitted the government is aware of the free fall in the Turkish currency two weeks ago – also caused by a tweet from Trump.
