Calls for Lekota to explain press conference with AfriForum

The Congress of the People (Cope) general-secretary Lyndall Shoppe-Mafole says she was completely unaware of the joint press conference between the party’s president Mosiuoa Lekota and AfriForum.

Cope and AfriForum held a joint press briefing on Monday, where the two parties announced that it would be joining hands to fight against land expropriation without compensation.

“I believe as GS of the party that when you are going to have such press conferences it is something that needs to be the decision of the party.

“I am not aware of any decision or discussion of the party on this press conference. So we are awaiting for the president to come and explain to the executive committee about it,” says Shoppe-Mafole.

The joint press briefing between Cope and AfriForum announced steps on how both organisation would fight against the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution.

"Cope and AfriForum will visit foreign embassies in South Africa together to request that the international community apply pressure on the South African government and the ruling ANC to honour the South African Constitution, property rights and the 1994 settlement and that the ANC accepts that they don’t have a legitimate mandate from South African voters via an election to amend the Constitution," Lekota said.
