Calls for Ramaphosa to reshuffle Cabinet

The Education for Social Justice Foundation (ESJF) has called newly elected President Cyril Ramaphosa to reappoint Dr Blade Nzimande as the higher education minister.

Deputy Chairperson, Hendrick Makaneta, says this will be in the interest of both staff and students.

Makaneta says when Nzimande's successor took office the "transformation process in the terrain of higher education" ended.

"It is very clear that Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize is struggling to steer the department in the right direction. We do not blame her as she has not taken the time to understand the terrain and how complex it is. It was under Nzimande that we witnessed a lot of progress in the system where the minister was able to consult stakeholders from time to time," Makaneta says.

"Higher education is a highly contested terrain of struggle. It requires a person of Dr. Nzimande's calibre who possess the capacity to analyse and resolve the complex issues affecting students. The Education for Social Justice Foundation has worked with Minister Nzimande and we can safely recommend him for reappointment to such a critical role," he adds.

Makaneta says at the time of his removal he still had plans for higher education.

He says former president Zuma's resignation will be an opportune moment for Nzimande to come back.

"The ESJF takes the opportunity to salute President Ramaphosa and wish him well in his journey of leading the Republic of South Africa," Makaneta concluded.
