Campaign launched to pay Mkhwebane legal fees

Civil society organisation Democracy in Action has launched a campaign to assist Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane in paying her personal costs orders.
The campaign, dubbed ‘Hands off the public protector’, has managed to collect some R8000 from members of the public.
The campaign follows the ruling on Monday by the Constitutional Court which found Mkhwebane to be personally liable for the legal costs incurred by the South African Reserve Bank during the Bankorp lifeboat matter.
The amount that Mkhwebane has to pay is estimated at some R900 000.
The organisation's Thabo Mtsweni says they have asked community members in different areas to donate any amount of money to assist the public protector to pay the cost as directed by the highest court in the land.
"We are pledging the public to chip in whatever little they may have into our account and that will be presented in total to the public protector to assist her in paying her fees off or a bit of the money owed."
Mtsweni says the campaign started running straight after Monday’s ruling.
In handing down the majority judgment, Justice Virginia Khampempe found that Mkhwebane was guilty of falsehoods and was not honest about her engagements during her investigations.
