Can you guess South Africa’s word of the year?
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) has revealed South Africa’s word of the year, and it will come as no surprise to those who have been following the news closely.
The 2018 South African word of the year is land expropriation without compensation, the board said on Tuesday.
PanSALB spokesperson Sibusiso Nkosi says choosing a word of the year has been done internationally for quite some time but is a relatively new phenomenon in South Africa.
"We look for a word that is on the lips of society, that is why we look for a popular word. We ask the public to give us suggestions which word deserves the title," says Nkosi.
He adds after the public's input the suggested words are then taken to media analysis process to see which word tops the rest.
“The use of the word land expropriation without compensation has increased significantly in 2018. The concept of land expropriation without compensation has been in existence, but PanSALB has seen a spike in frequency this year in the context of Parliament’s effort to change the constitution to allow land to be expropriated without compensation.”
Nkosi says 'land expropriation without compensation' managed to top words like Thuma Mina, that has become synonymous with President Cyril Ramaphosa and the governing party.
“It was found that “land expropriation without compensation” was used over 25 000 times in all South African media, beating words like
Commission (of inquiry) at 18 690 and Thuma Mina at 5228.”
