Car-chase leads to discovery of illicit cigarettes in Polokwane
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
The police in Polokwane have discovered illicit cigarettes while chasing a Toyota Quantum that was being driven recklessly along the Polokwane by-pass.
The SAPS’ Motlafela Mojapelo says the Quantum was caught in the early hours of Wednesday morning on the R37 road between Polokwane and Ga-Chuene, leading to the road being temporarily closed.
"The vehicle joined the R37 road towards Burgersfort and immediately after passing Polokwane Smelters, the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with three other vehicles travelling towards Polokwane. The Quantum was transporting illicit cigarettes," said Mojapelo.
The driver of one of the vehicles died on the scene.
"His wife, the suspect…and the occupants of the other two vehicles were taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
Cases of culpable homicide and possession of illicit cigarettes have been opened and police investigations are continuing.
