Carrim: I am not conflicted on VBS saga

Chairperson of Parliament's Standing Committee on Finance, Yunus Carrim, maintains he has no knowledge of the SACP receiving money from the bankrupt VBS Mutual Bank.

Carrim reacted on Wednesday morning, after receiving a letter from Economic Freedom Fighters' (EFF) Deputy President, Floyd Shivambu.

In it, Shivambu requests Carrim to recuse himself from the committee.

Shivambu accuses the South African Communist Party (SACP), which the chairperson belongs to, of receiving R3 million in donations from VBS Mutual Bank and Vele Investments.

The committee is looking into the large-scale looting of VBS Mutual Bank.

However, Carrim has told MPs he has no idea what the issue entails.

"I am not conflicted... I have checked with the General Secretary of SACP Blade Nzimade, and National Treasurer, Joyce Moloi-Moropa and both have said that the SACP has not received money from VBS Mutual Bank or Vele Investments," said Carrim.

He pointed out even if Shivambu's request for him to recuse himself was valid, the majority of political parties in the committee have been implicated in the VBS saga.

The report by Advocate Terry Motau entitled "The Great Bank Heist" has implicated some ANC officials, including the deputy chairperson of the ANC in Limpopo Florence Radzilani and provincial treasurer Danny Msiza.

Shivambu's brother, Brian Shivambu, was also implicated as one of the more than 50 individuals who benefitted from the scheme, apparently walking away with R16 million.

Carrim further said to the EFF's Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, he would step down if he is found to have lied to the committee.

"You know what Mr. Ndlozi, take it to the police that the chairperson lied."
