The case against the six men accused of the murder of whistleblower Babita Deokaran has been postponed to 1 October for a formal bail application.

Deokaran (53) was gunned down outside her home in Winchester Hills south of Johannesburg last month, she was acting Chief Financial Officer in the Gauteng Department Health.

The accused made a brief appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana said the state will oppose the bail application.

“The accused are facing charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition. The defense was not ready to commence with the case. Investigations are ongoing and we cannot exclude the possibility of more arrests, but we will be guided by the investigation if more people are involved.”

Mjonondwana said the NPA cannot at this stage disclose if the any of the accused  have confessed to the killing or have turned state witness.

Last month the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) confirmed that Deokaran was a witness in the investigation of a multi-million rand PPE tender corruption scandal within the Health department in the province.
