Phalane died in hospital after he was shot outside his family home in Soshanguve when assailants hijacked his father.

Two men, aged 29 and 30, appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges of being in possession of prohibited firearms and unlicensed ammunition.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, one of the suspects is out on bail for a similar offence.

"The two accused are facing respective schedules [of the charges]. Accused number one is facing schedule five offence because of the nature of the firearm they were carrying. Accused number two is facing schedule six because he is out on bail on charges that are also schedule five offence, which then makes his count in this matter a schedule six offence."

The media and members of the public were barred from attending proceedings.

"The media and the public are not allowed inside the court because identity parade will still need to be conducted. Therefore, by identifying them, it might sabotage the investigations of the matter," explained Mahanjana.

Two other suspects appeared in the Pretoria north and Soshanguve Magistrates respectively, on the day of Phalane's funeral last Friday.
